Here are some thoughts...

First a Rec: I'd really like people to read this. Everyone if you're willing to stomach it. It's part of HD worldcup, but it's not... I don't know how to explain it. It isn't what you might think. There's no sex, no kissing, just a discussion between HArry and Blaise on the day Harry and Draco are supposed to be married.

I won't say any more until you read it, but I have thoughts under the cut.

And a Question.

So, [ profile] eeyore9990 just posted a bit of meta about why Dumbledore had Snape try to teach Harry Legillimency.

Assuming that everything in the series was important to the plot (yeah, it's a pretty major assumption), and that each of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers were hand-selected by Dumbledore (with the exception of Dolores Umbridge) for a specific reason... (can you guess where I'm going with this?)

... Why do you think he chose Gilderoy Lockhart in year 2? I mean, surely he knew the man was underqualified. And I'm positive he suspected that there would be something else amiss since Voldemort had already tried to come back using Harry as a means once. So, why Lockhart?

Now, in my heart of hearts, I'm quite sure Rowling had no intention for him. He was comic relief, and just an excuse to send Harry out sleuthing because he didn't have a professor to turn to.

However, she let it get out of hand, and she allowed these characters - namely Dumbledore - to take on an entirely deeper meaning than originally intended, which means that there must have been some reason for him to pick Lockhart.

What does Gilderoy have to offer? Or perhaps it isn't what Gilderoy can do for him, but what he can do for Gilderoy? Maybe in the same respect as Sybil Trelawney - he was protecting Gilderoy?

I have my own pet theories, and I know there aren't many of you out there who even think of Lockhart when asked to name off all of the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers, or even Hogwarts Faculty. Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank is probably higher on many of your lists than this Wizard, but you guys know I have a special place in my heart for him.

And I think I know why. I've got to sort out a few more things, and I'll share that with you later.

In the mean time, what to you think Albus was trying to achieve by bringing Lockhart to Hogwarts?
